A home computers Random Access Memory (simply short term memory) is where the personal computer stores specified data that it uses frequently so it can be accessed easily and quickly. The capacity of the RAM will effect the computer’s speed and performance. “RAM” or Random Access Memory is different from the computer’s hard drive memory. Hard Drive Memory stores most of your photo’s, mp3′s, programs, and other data.

Here are some reasons you may need to add RAM:

(1) The two principle operating systems these days are Windows XP and Windows Vista. XP needs much more RAM than does Vista, perhaps as much as double the memory capacity. Look at your operating system. If it utilizes up close to 75 percent of your RAM capacity your PC will be slow.

(2) Gaming needs much more RAM than does simply surfing the internet, word-processing, etc. In addition, gaming also requires very fast processor performance. So, if your computer is not fast enough while play computer games, check your game specs next to your processor speed.

(3) A lot of slow computers just don’t possess adequate RAM. And besides RAM isn’t expensive. When ordering or buying a new personal computer, get additional RAM added. It is a good investment.

There’s an easy TEST that will determine if the computer has an adequate amount of RAM. Right click on your desktop’s bottom toolbar and you will find a pop-up box. Next click on “Task Manager” and it should open displaying the Applications, Processes, and so forth that may be running. Also check at the lower part of the screen box and you should see: “Processes”, “CPU Usage”, and “Physical Memory”.

Compare CPU Usage and the listing for Physical Memory. CPU usage rate is the amount of your pc’s CPU (or engine) capacity is being utilized by proportion (i.e. 0% is idol and 100% is max’ed out). The Physical Memory is your Computer’s ram. This shows what is happening in your computer’s processor. Simply put: The closer your computer’s Physical Memory is to 100 percent the harder your computer will have to work to keep up. And the more sluggish your personal computer will be.

Now, let your computer fully catch up and then run at idol. Your CPU usage rate should fall to 0% or at the least to 10 percent. (If it does not go down this low then you have a computer program operating – it possibly might be your virus protection program that is running, if not you may have been infected by a virus – and that is a different problem.) Once the CPU has fallen near to an idol, check out your Physical Memory ratio. If your computer’s Physical Memory or RAM still shows to be in the 75% or plus vicinity you do not have enough RAM to conduct your PC at optimum speeds.
