The truth of the matter is there is only one thing that’s going to make you a good prospector, and that is repetition and experience. Getting on the phone and following what I learned about connecting with people allowed me to have 5 new team members join my team in less than 2 days. That to me meant that I had truly figured out how to connect with people on the phone.

The first step is actually picking up the phone and connecting with your leads. This will become easier when you realize what’s really happening. You don’t have to make phone calls, you simply have to create conversations with people who want to connect with you. You’re not really getting on the phone and pushing products to people, but rather creating a personal connection with your lead and deciding if they’re someone who is right for you team or product through a series of questions. Then simply getting them to realize on their own that they want what you have to offer.

Realize that prospecting leads is the only way that you actually get paid for all of your efforts. Everything that leads up to that point is necessary to get to that point, however if you don’t actually get on the phone and connect with your leads, you’ll never make sales and ultimately never make any money. Once you’ve learned a little about them, lead into finding out the reason why they’re looking for your product or services benefits.

Notice how you’re constantly asking questions and listening to their response to discover exactly what they need, why they need it, and if you have what they need. You must become a master asker if you ever want to become a master closer. What I mean by this is that you want the other person to be doing most of the talking so that you can listen to what they really want and need in their responses. Ask questions that will allow qualify them for your time and your product or service. Ask questions that appeal to their emotions rather than their thoughts, because 85% of people buy based off of emotion.

Now on to the biggest “Ah-Ha” moment I had about 10 days ago. Make sure that when you’re prospecting your leads that you weed out any and all objections early on in the conversation so that they don’t have any objections at the end of the conversation so you can more easily close the sale. What I mean by this is ask early on in the conversation a question like, “if this were the perfect solution to your problem, do you have the money set aside to purchase this product?” Use this same concept with other objections like time, and seeing if they’re the only person required to make the decision about spending money or starting a business. If they say they don’t have the money, time, or whatever you then ask how they feel about that situation and if they can do something to change that. They’ll either offer a solution, or tell you they can’t make it happen, in which case you schedule follow-up or let them go.

Remember that when you spend time on the phone with people you want to minimize the amount of time you spend with people that don’t deserve it. A master closer doesn’t close every sale, they simply don’t waste time on the phone when they could be producing in other areas to generate more leads and more future phone conversations. Never ever get emotionally attached to any of your leads. Begin to say whatever you feel emotionally rather than what you think is the right thing to say. People connect better with someone who’s open to being connected with emotionally. Master the ability to connect emotionally, and you’ll become the master closer that you need to be to reach the top of your company or system.

I started pondering on a subject about 7 days before I wrote my ‘Evil Genius’ article that I came up with while I was watching a gorgeous Costa Rican sunset, and I haven’t been able to get this concept out of my mind for a week.

I started thinking back to the time I got involved in the Network Marketing industry – why I got involved with it – and how some of that model has gradually shifted for me over the years, as I’ve came to an understanding about life, the universe, and selling stuff.

This industry is partly hilarious – mostly because of all the hoopla that’s caused by a vast majority of the leaders having absolutely no idea what they’re talking about, and simultaneously trying to run around teaching everyone how to do things like ‘generate 50 leads a day’ or ‘recruit distributors on auto-pilot without ever picking up the phone’.

I actually got off the phone with an old team member of mine who was with me before iLearningGlobal collapsed into a pile of dust – and after the company went down, he ended up joining up with one of these ‘I never pick up the phone’ gurus.

It was kind of funny to see it unfold, because after he joined the marketing guru – he still couldn’t get him to pick up the phone. Lol. It’s funny to see the light go off in someone’s eyes when they realize that the same message that sells them a pile of bull-shit is the very message preventing their success.

For example – how in the hell are you going to learn how to sponsor people without picking up the phone – if you’re trying to learn it from someone who hates talking to people? That’s like trying to learn how to meditate from someone who thinks it’s evil. If you want to learn how to sponsor people without picking up the phone – you’re going to have to pay a guru a lot of money to learn it – or learn it on your own.

But here’s a challenge to that mind-set – if you don’t want to pick up the phone – why in the name of sanity are you in Network Marketing at all? If you want to sell stuff, there’s WAY bigger commissions from selling your own products than their is from selling other people’s stuff (MLM included). The ONLY reason to be in network marketing is for the leverage, relationships, and time freedom that it can create.

Let me give you a couple of examples of what I mean, and then let’s get back into our core message on being a real leader.

He’s sponsored about 40 people, makes about $8 million a year from Monavie and probably (I’ve heard – so this is really just hearsay) but PROBABLY another $8 million a year from R3 Global, his support system. (in other words – he earns about twice as much as Mike Dillard from both his support system AND his actual company, for a total of about 4 times the income of the largest leader in the online network marketing community). Plus, Brig has less employees, no marketing expenses, and probably a better lifestyle. (Not to do anything but edify Mr. D. – I love his training and think everyone should go through it)…

Ron Puryear is the leader of World Wide Dreambuilders in Amway, and has the 3rd largest team in the company. He’s sponsored 40 people since about 1972 – the approximate year he got involved. I don’t know how many people he has in his team, and to be honest, I don’t even like the culture there – but I know he has at least a million people downline from him, and every year it grows.

Brad Duncan is one of Ron Puryear’s founders triple diamonds, has only sponsored 40 people, started in 1981, and has earned more than $40 million from network marketing over the last 29 years.

When I was in Agel Enterprises, I saw Eric Worre get to $60,000 a month from sponsoring 40 people. Now, he’s brought in more than that now, but still…

I could go on and on – but let me tell you something, those examples are a few out of thousands of people who have built the largest teams in Network Marketing without sponsoring lots of people.

So where’s the big money at in this industry? It’s pretty simple, really – the biggest money is earned by the people that create the most success in their teams. It has almost nothing to do with personally enrolling. Now – PLEASE – hear me out for a second – MOST of you need to sponsor more people, so please don’t be a moron and sit on the two distributors you have and try to brainstorm 50 ways to get them more pumped, it’s not going to work.

YES, you need to sponsor some pretty serious width most of the time to get moving in your team – but let me ask you a question -

- are you as focused on the success of your team as you are on sponsoring – or are you just out to earn those fast track bonuses?

OUCH.

In my opinion, here’s the formula for financial independence, time freedom, and leverage in network marketing (and you can quote me):

Help five people make more money in a month than they’ve ever made in a year, and I challenge you to TRY to get them to quit.

Yes, sponsoring is important, but not as important as sponsoring in depth, and not as important as learning how to teach, and not as important as the success of your team.

Just my two cents. As a leader, is it ok to be hard to get ahold of? Of course – but if you don’t want to find some way to really teach your skill set, create leverage, and focus on the success of your team, do something else for a living than trying to build a big network, because in the end, unless you are the absolute luckiest person on earth, your team will fall apart if they’re not taught the skills.

What’s the best way to teach? Build wide first to make the money – and then learn to build deep. The depth you create with your team will create more leverage than any other skillset you could possibly leverage in network marketing and I promise – your life will never be the same.
